Middleton is located in Essex County, Massachusetts, and was settled back in 1659 but wasn’t incorporated until 1728. While originally considered a part of Salem, it also contains territory previously within the limits of Andover, Boxford, and Topsfield. The town got its name because it was midway between the early settlements of Salem and Andover. Middleton occupies a total area of 14.5 square miles and lies along the border of Essex County. Some of Middleton’s neighboring towns include North Reading, North Andover, Boxford, Danvers, and Peabody.

Within Middleton’s borders are portions of the Harold Parker State Forest, the Boxford State Forest, Peabody Reservation, Sanford Reservation, and Middleton Conservation Land.
